Basing on theories of exile and diaspora, this article investigates Zhao zi-fan's novels to reveal Zhao's philosophy of life and the aesthetics of the novel. It takes anti-exile and anti-diaspora perspective to look at Zhao's rebellious modernity. At the core of Zhao's writings is the experience of “terror,” which corresponds to Walter Benjamin's “shock,” as he elaborates in his modernist negative aesthetics. Zhao’s novels demonstrate an effective fusion of East-West aesthetics. |
