Modern Taiwanese Literature Full-text Search System

Since 1999, the NCL has been building a full-text search system for modern Taiwanese literature with financial support from the Council for Cultural Affairs Council (CCA), Executive Yuan. The project is an extension of a full-text image system for contemporary literature and historical materials, also developed by the NCL in cooperation with the CCA. Once completed, the literature search system will enable users to search the full texts of publications as well as display on screen images of entire books from cover to back. All images are scanned in 300dpi TIFF color format, and also converted to black and white 72dpi JPG files for faster downloads, and processed into searchable text using OCR software. Nearly 58,000 pages from 10 literary periodicals have been entered into the system as of the end of 2001.
