Wang renyu was an important political figure and writer around the end of the Tang Dynasty and beginning of the Five Dynasties (ca. 900 A.D.). He produced many scholarly works, but these have largely become forgotten. Although a compilation of his works has been published, and some have taken notice of his importance, very little research has been done on him in the fields of history and literature. This study describes Wang’s life and works, with particular emphasis on his writings on historical geography and his observations of the natural environment. Because of his diverse interests and sharp observations, which he begun in his youth, he left us with many significant works. These show an interest in ordinary people, and document the geography, social life, and natural environment of his time, making them an invaluable source of information for environmental historiography. |
