本文旨在評介近五十年來統萬城的研究概況與討論重點，並藉以窺見歷史地理學與其他學科之關係，以及未來可能的研究走向與趨勢。依據統萬城研究的討論重點，分為三部份：統萬城與毛烏素沙漠環境變遷、統萬城的城市結構，以及統萬城名考釋。

This text aims at the study review and commentary about the study situation and key point at Tong-wan city over the past 50 years. And, by the way, detect the relation between historical geography and other disciplineses, and possible research is moved towards in the future and trend. According to the discussion focal point which Tong-wan city study, divided into three parts: environmental change about Tong-wan city and Mao-wu-su(毛烏素) desert, urban structure of Tong-wan city, investigate the name of Tong-wan city.
