掌握變化的道德－－《荀子》「誠」概念的結構

The Virtue of Mastering Change: The Concept of Sincerity (Cheng) in the Xunzi

本文藉由戰國諸概念、諸思想的「交流」和「綜合」，來探討《荀子》「誠」概念的特質。全文著眼於荀子的「變化觀」與〈中庸〉「誠」思想的關係，以期呈顯《荀子》與〈中庸〉兩文獻中「誠」概念在中國古代儒學上的意義，進而呈現戰國末年的思想潮流中，荀子思想之「新」的特色。全文論述分三階段：1.《荀子》中的「變」、「化」字以及「變化」詞的用例和其特色；2.《荀子》與〈中庸〉中「變化」和「誠」的用例之異同；3.分析《荀子》中的「誠」和「變化」兩者間的關係，以及與〈中庸〉「誠」和「化」思想的關係。根據分析，本文主張《荀子》的「變化論」實兼顧兩面─首先《荀子》極重視「物」或「人」個體的變化與環境狀況的變化，故提出「應變」和「治變」觀念，並進而主張掌握「變化」的必要。因此，荀子的政治社會理論是將當時存在的各種變化論也放在眼界中。其次，荀子的「誠論」應是從〈中庸〉「化育萬物」的理論發展而成。唯荀子的「誠」效力更大，不僅統治者能以此「化育萬物」，而且還能「變化代興」。由於荀子宣稱「變化代興」之來源為「人之守」和「義之行」，故奠定其「變化論」之道德基礎。此論述架構遂支持了《易傳》的形成和流行。

This article aims to elucidate the characteristics of the concept of cheng 誠(sincerity/co-creativity) in the Xunzi 荀子 in the intellectual context of the mutual influence and synthesis of various conceptual terms in Warring States Chinese thought. The particular focus is on the conceptual relationship between the idea of change in the Xunzi and the idea of cheng in the Zhongyong 中庸. The author points out that in contrast with the idea of change in the Zhongyong only denoting that of people or creatures, the idea of change in the Xunzi is double-faceted: it implies the ability to transform oneself into a virtuous person and also to bring oneself into accord with any environmental change. Such comprehensiveness enabled Xun Zi to consolidate the foundation of his moral philosophy, which then fostered the formation and circulation of the idea of change in the Book of Changes 易傳 and its commentaries.
