英文摘要 |
This article aims to elucidate the characteristics of the concept of cheng 誠(sincerity/co-creativity) in the Xunzi 荀子 in the intellectual context of the mutual influence and synthesis of various conceptual terms in Warring States Chinese thought. The particular focus is on the conceptual relationship between the idea of change in the Xunzi and the idea of cheng in the Zhongyong 中庸. The author points out that in contrast with the idea of change in the Zhongyong only denoting that of people or creatures, the idea of change in the Xunzi is double-faceted: it implies the ability to transform oneself into a virtuous person and also to bring oneself into accord with any environmental change. Such comprehensiveness enabled Xun Zi to consolidate the foundation of his moral philosophy, which then fostered the formation and circulation of the idea of change in the Book of Changes 易傳 and its commentaries. |
