There are some patterns in Huanggang 黃岡 Sdialect that are related to the“V + bu ( 不) + VP”pattern in standard Mandarin. These include“VP + ‘bu’( 不),”“VP + bu ( 不) + modal particle,”and“VP + bei ( 唄, a modal particle).” Such patterns appear with different degrees of frequency in Hongan 紅安, Huangmei 黃梅, and Tuanfeng 團風 (counties under Huanggang's jurisdiction). This reflects the grammatical process of “bu”( 不) changing into “bei,”forming a chain of “half-negative and half-affirmative repetition questions→affirmative-leaning repetition questions→yes-no questions.”This is also a reflection of pattern transformation in Chinese linguistic history. However, the“VP + mao ( 冇)”pattern that is abbreviated from the“V+mao ( 冇) + VP”pattern does not have such changes. |
