The survey was conducted during the period of August 1986 to May 1987 to detect the present of preservatives in the cold storage foods in Taiwan. The food additives under investigation were salicylic acid,p-hydroxybenzoic acid and its related esters, benzoic acid, sorbic acid and dehydroacetic acid. A total number of 316 samples was collected from supermarkets and traditional retailer around The Island. The results showed that 145 out of 316 samples (45.9%) of cold storage foods were contained preservative in single or combined usage, however only 27 samples (all local products) of them were found using prohibited additive (8.5%). The survey also indicated that the goods in supermarkets under better cold storing conditions and with well-known brand were much more reliable than traditional retail stores in terms of the content of food preservatives. |
