The purpose of this investigation was to assess the hygienic condition of alcoholic beverages produced in Mainland China and imported for sale in Taiwan. The investigated items included the content of methanol, heavy metals (i.e.lead, copper and cadmium), artificial colorants, preservatives, and nitrosoamines. 100 samples, including 68 different kinds of wines and liquids, recovered from smuggling operations, were supplied by the Customs Offices at Keelung, Taichung and Kaoshung. The results were shown below: The methanol content of one hundred samples were all under 1000 ppm and lead below 0.1 ppm. In add ition, the copper content was all lower than 5 ppm. Nevertheless, the cadmium content of three samples exceeded 0.01 ppm. In addition, artificial colorants, preservatives, and nitrosoamines were not detected. Since there are no current hygiene regulatory guidelines for alcoholic beverages in Taiwan, these results may serve as references for future regulations and for the requirement to attend the World Trade Organization. |
