The contents of preservatives and antioxidants in dairy and margarine products has been investigated. One hundred samples of cream (7), butter (12), cheese (54), and margarine (27) were analyzed accroding to the Official Methods. Twenty-two cheese and two margarine samples were found to contain sorbates as preservatives while four margarine samples had benzoates. Among them, one US-made margarine sample violeted the hygiene regulations by containing 430 ppm benzoates. Only three out of one hundred samples contained slight amounts of antioxidants BHA or BHT, within the allowable levels, and therefore, did not violate the hygiene regulations. |
