In order to investigate the sugar content and artificial sweetener in beverages, 102 samples were randomnly purchased from the supermarkets and retail shops throughout the major counties of northern md southern Taiwan. The sugar content was examined by HPLC, while the artificial sweetener was examined according to CNS and by the official method suggested by the Department of Health, Executive Yuan. The results of sugar content were as following: 1. The average of the 23 samples of vegetable and juice drinks was 11.5 g/100 ml; the sugar content of one sample labeled '100% natural coconut juice' was 4.4 g/100 ml, while that of one smple lab led '100% natural orange juice' and those of two samples labeled' 100% natural grape juice' were 9.5, 16.5 and 16.8 g/100 ml, respectively. 2. The average of the 16 samples of coffee drinks was 11.5 g/100 ml; 3. The average of the 7 samples of sports drinks was 7.5 g/100 ml; 4. Among the 21 samples of tea drinks, the average of 11 samples that were labeled 'Low calorie “Low sugar' was 4.2 g/ml, while that of the others was 8.5 g/100 ml; 5. For 19 samples of carbonated drinks, artificial sweeteners were found within 4 of the 19 carbonated drink samples. Their average sugar content, together with that of one sample labeled 'Low calorie' was 5.7 g/100 ml, while that of an additional 14 samples was 9.7 g/100 ml. 6. The average of the other 16 samples was 9.8 g/100 ml. Artifical sweeteners were examined in 4 of the 102 samples, and those are all carbonated drinks: Cyclamate and aspartame. were found in one sample, aspartame only were found in two samples, while saccharin was found in another sample. However, all the contents of the additives in the 4 samples were below the acceptable level of the rule for food additives. |
