The research in indigenous languages and communication during fieldworks may face similar ethical issues due to their similar methodologies, such as filming and recording. Additionally, with the growing use of digital technologies (i.e., digital camera, recorders, computers, and the Internet) in documenting, archiving, and disseminating indigenous cultural materials or language data, more ethical and legal issues will be involved such as protection of copyright, interpretation and representation of ethnic images, right and access of collected data. However, nowadays only basic ethical principles and protocols are practiced regarding indigenous research in Taiwan. In order to establish explicit guidelines for indigenous language and communication researchers, a collaborative approach from both fields was applied to explore potential ethical issues in current research situations, to review established ethical guidelines in other countries, and to converse with local indigenous communities. |
