Social group work is one of the traditional direct methods in social work and also an obligatory foundation course in undergraduate programs in Taiwan. Its importance within professional fundamental training for undergraduate students cannot be overemphasized. This article aims to evaluate the effectiveness of the course ‘social group work’, to understand students’ learning experiences and difficulties, as well as to make suggestions for course design and teaching strategies. According to the results of quantitative data analysis, the training experience of leading off-campus small groups significantly enhances students’ group leading competencies. As to qualitative research findings, it is found that students lack skills in diagnosing and intervening in individual group member’s behaviors, may have insufficient sensitivity to group dynamics, and are unable to adequately evaluate group effectiveness. Based on the research results, the authors recommend that under the course instructor’s supervision and direction, it is feasible to arrange off-campus group skills training to improve students’ group leading competencies. |
