In July 2016, the Australian Broadcasting Cooperation revealed an investigation into the alleged mistreatment of children, including some aborigines, at Darwin’s Don Dale youth detention center which shocked Australian society. Although Australia is a multicultural country, this case still shows Indigenous Australians are disadvantaged in Australia. From the various protection acts of the early 1900s and assimilation policies to the 1938 Aboriginal rights movement in Sydney, through Mabo v Queensland and to the Recognition Act, Australia’s aboriginal people have kept striving for civil, identity and land rights (Native Title). The Australian government has made motions to improve Indigenous’ education and civil rights to help Indigenous’ development. However, despite the Australian government’s professions of a “Fair Go” for everyone, the rights of Indigenous Australians are still a crucial and controversial issue in Australia. |
