This research aims to produce activated carbon cloth and evaluate their performance on passive sampling. Non-woven and woven rayon were used to produce four types of activated carbon cloth, T1190, T890, RS590 and RS390. Type T carbon cloth were made from the non-woven rayon by different transporting speed, while type RS was from the woven kind. The specific surface area of these carbon cloth were 1000 m2/g, 1500 m2/g, 1500 m2/g and 2000 m2/g. By replacing the absorbent pad of 3M 3500 OVM, the performance of these cloth were evaluated against toluene. Media blank, desorption efficiency, sampling rate, sampling capacity, reverse diffusion, coexist interference and field validation were all investigated. Results show that these four kinds of cloth are suitable for collecting toluene vapor, and their desorption efficiency is above 95%. Sampling rates of these four types of cloth, T1190, T890, RS590 and RS390, were 27.77 mL/min, 26.78 mL /min, 28.10 mL /min and 27.90 mL /min, respectively. The sampling rates show, statistically, no significant difference in the type of the texture and the surface area of these four kinds of cloth (p=0.77). Reverse diffusion was not found in this study. There is a very good agreement between passive and active samplings in grouped samples(n=6) in the field validation, (relative error ±3.25%). We conclude that these four kinds of cloth were all suitable to replace the absorbent pad on passive sampling badge. |
