The main purpose of this research is to develop the college students' mobile phones motivation scale and examine the predictive effect of mobile phone usage motivations on mobile phone usage, and the current states of mobile phone usage motivations and mobile phone usage. A total of 160 students from private colleges in Taiwan participated in this study. The results showed that different motivations can significantly predict mobile phone usage. The motivation of contact with peers can predict the phone usage time, phone calls, and mobile phone charges. Furthermore, the motivations for younger students are contact with family, entertainment, and pass time. In addition, college students want to feel at ease, have greater peace of mind, a sense of security, and greater calm, thus, they will send more SMS. It should be noted that students with higher socioeconomic backgrounds will make more calls on mobile phone, which results in higher average monthly charges. Finally, the research results are discussed and suggestions for future research are offered. |
