This study investigated the rhythmic patterns of beginning- or intermediate-level Taiwanese learners in oral reading in Japanese and in Chinese by measuring mora, vowel, and consonant durations. The main results showed that the learners’ rhythmic patterns resembled native Japanese speakers’ at the mora and consonant levels but not at the vowel level, particularly for /o/. On the basis of these findings, some research and educational implications for Taiwanese learners’ oral reading are briefly discussed. |
