A direct displacement-based design approach has been recognized as one of the most potential methods for a simple- and easy-to-use preliminary design when using performance-based seismic design methodology. Such a method is oriented by displacement limit. Therefore, it is very suitable for a design to control structural displacement. This paper describes the difference in the design flowchart by applying a displacement-based design method from using a force-based method in the performance-based seismic design. The paper also focused on proposing a simple but efficient design procedure to increase design efficiency. Finally, the design procedure is described by using a RC building as example. Nonlinear static pushover analysis has been adopted to demonstrate the benefit of a displacement-based design over a traditionally force-based design method. |
