In the education of deaf children and adolescents, one of the most important goals is the dovelopment of adequate reading and writing skills in the language of mainstream society. After briefly describing the term deafness, this article demonstrates that the reading process of deaf children is qualitatively similar to that of hearing children. In addition, it is argued that reading is an interactive process, based on the synthesis of major, common elements across reading comprehension theories. Finally, the article offers implications for teaching English reading skills to deaf children. |
