In the face of current circumstances in Taiwan, how are local thinkers supposed to regard Chinese philosophy and the spirit of Chinese culture? How are we to conduct research in Chinese philosophy and to deal with the many-faceted relations between Taiwanese culture and traditional Chinese philosophy? These are daunting questions serious Taiwanese thinkers must take into account. Therefore, this article would like to focus on current research being conducted on Chinese philosophy by Taiwanese academics from historical, cultural and spiritual dimensions. Moreover, I would like to attempt to deal with certain components of traditional Chinese culture in cracking the so-called “hegemony of Chinese philosophy.” This is a daunting task in that we need to navigate the often times tortuous path of Taiwan's historical obstacles in finding an indigenous philosophical subjectivity. In this process, we must find how to transcend China and set our focus on Taiwan in reflecting on the life of our own land. We must dedicate ourselves to allowing for the birth of an indigenous Taiwan philosophy that gives us true ideals and true hope. |
