Homogenous tile with polished finishing( polished tile) has been widely used in the residential, commercial, and industrial projects due to its durability resulting from low porosity. Yet, the bonding of polished tile has become a subject of interest because many tile installation failures were reported recently. Tiles de-bonding may be resulted from unskillful workmanship, poor substrate preparation, inadequate mixture design of tile adhesives, or compound reasons. In this study, the experiments were designed using an L18( 21 x37) orthogonal array with eight factors, namely open time, ambient temperature, various dosages of different types of polymers. The responses investigated were tensile adhesion strength at various ages, and fractured mortar areas. The obtained results were evaluated statistically. It was found that the tensile adhesion strength and fractured mortar areas were most significantly influenced by the open time, followed by dosage of re-dispersible polymer powder, proportion of cementitious composition, and ambient temperature, while types of re-dispersible polymers and water soluble polymer were insignificant. The confirmatory tests also indicated that the optimized tensile adhesion strengths after various aging had increased to the level similar to the estimated values. Nevertheless, the estimated S/N ratio was greater than the experimental result, which suggests that some interactions may be existed among control factors. In practice, the open time should not exceed 5 minutes and apply tile adhesive to both the substrate and the back of the tile are recommended. |
