Public library's patrons are comprehensive. Special readers of physically and psychologically disadvantaged are included in her service objects. But general librarians of public libraries do not understand special readers' difficulties and needs, neither know how to serve them. The following nine categories of special readers in public libraries are discussed in this paper: blind, deaf, physically handicapped, psychologically handicapped, language handicapped, prisoners, minorities, migrants and the poor. First, the author defines who are special readers, the number of them, and reasons of why they do not use the library. Then the researcher introduces their difficulties. Special needs and foreign libraries' services to special readers of each category. At last, she talks about whether we have these services or not in public libraries of our own country and how should librarians supply their services for special readers. |
