The elder are the major group of the bed-ridden, who suffer from many complications such as bedsores, muscle degeneration or other physiological dysfunction occasionally. Our research is to evaluate the permissibility of automatic turnover and percussing bed for its percussive function to care the bed-ridden. Percussion is an adequate stimulation to trigger the stretch reflex of the muscle of the back. Automatic percussing triggers the stretch reflex continuously, which also causes the weak contraction of the dorsal muscle too. Thus the automatic percussing may promote the blood flow and muscle activity of the back of the bed-ridden. Our results shows that, in rest bed-ridden condition the basal blood flow values were very stable and the average value was 75±10 (%/min). The blood flow increased after percussing 3-4 min significantly, and reached the first peak value about 125±26 (%/min) after 6 min. Applying statistic test to the basal and peak blood flow values shows that the difference between the rest and percussive condition is significant. Our results suggest that automatic turnover and percussing sickbed may be a suitable caring method for the bed-ridden, because that it promotes the blood flow and muscle activity of the back. |
