The assistive devices for transferring is divided into the following: (1) Mechanical power patient lifter, (2) Sliding aids with lower friction which provide support of transferring pathway, (3) Ergonomic handles which provide better grasp to the care givers. Selecting of the method of transferring and the using of assistive devices both are subject to the evaluation of the patients' abilities and the environment factors. Nevertheless, it is common consent that maintenance of a patient's independence by encouraging mobility is paramount. Nowadays, in Taiwan, there are some evaluation procedure and assessment tools for the above. However, due to insufficient attention to the occupational injuries of care givers and lack of proper education and training caused the use of assistive devices for transferring significantly behind, in comparison with the other advanced nations. In recent years, the above subject has being discussed and paid more attention. We hope to improve the quality of safe patient handling in Taiwan by advocating and educating for “No Lift Policy”. |
