In general, the academic performance of visually impaired students in mathematics is below average. This is due to, in part, the instructional materials, assistive tools, and teaching methods not being designed to meet the special needs of the individual student. For this study, we used questionnaires to access the learning problems of visually impaired students in their mathematics learning. With this information, we produced instructional mathematics textbooks using the Digital Accessible Information SYstem (DAISY) full-text format and the DAISY book can be played on the AMIS reader. A preliminary investigation was then carried out to investigate whether or not the DAISY mathematical textbooks enhanced the reading skills of the visually impaired students. In this research, there were 12 students, grades 7-9, who were provided four days’ course using the DAISY book. The NASA-TLX subjective scales were collected from the students pre- and post-course. The time to answer each question and the percentage of correct answers (using objective assessments) was collected at the end of the course. The results showed that the DAISY textbook provided a better reading format for the visually impaired students as compared with mathematics textbooks in Braille. |
