Programming is a compulsory course for the beginner in the field of information, but it’s not easy to learn. Past research indicated that when learning the programming course, adding the game factors can increase learner motivation and effectiveness. Moreover, importing competition strategy can promote learning atmosphere. To empirically evaluate the influence of competitive strategy to learning motivation and effectiveness, this study joined the ranking of the barrier achievements and experience which have the competition nature in the game-based learning environment. The teaching experiments were conducted for freshman on a programming course. The results showed that the barrier achievement’s level and experience’s level influence each other. The learning effectiveness for students with higher barrier achievements are not good, on the contrary, the higher experience students have the better learning effectiveness. Through the interviews, we found that the students with higher barrier achievements care about the ranking and only wish quick pass and do not learn more. The students with higher experience think the ranking is not important. They more emphasize on the effectiveness that learns after. |
