The paper aims to elucidate the usage of ambitransitive verbs in loanwords based on the data of BCCWJ. Specifically, the following research questions are addressed: (a) What types of ambitransitive verbs exist in loanwords, and which case-marked nouns do they co-occur and how are they used? (b) What usage tendencies are observed in transitive construction and ''- saseru'' (causative) construction involving ambitransitive loanverbs? Regarding (a), this paper investigates the types of ambitransitive verbs in loanwords found in BCCWJ and the case-marked nouns of those verbs. It is revealed that intransitive sentences constitute over half of the instances, and the most high-frequency ambitransitive loanverbs are ''appu-suru'' (to go up), ''sutaato-suru'' (to start), ''oopun-suru'' (to open). For(b), this paper examines the tendencies in using these verbs in transitive sentences and ''-saseru'' (causative) sentences, focusing on the frequently appearing ambitransitive loanverbs ''appu-suru'', ''sutaato-suru'', ''oopun-suru''. ''Appu-suru'' are found in [action-type] construction and [cause-type] construction, while ''sutaato-suru'' and ''oupun-suru'' are found only in [action-type] construction. The analysis reveals that ''-saseru'' sentences carry the function of enhancing action and causality. |
