Bilingual education policy, is a national education priority. It’s educational goals are to promote internationalizations and develop Global Competence. The motivation of this study is to understand trends in research and development, of knowledge-based bilingual education and to forecast long-term direction of bilingual education. This study is a systematic bibliometric analysis of research using Histcite. The research question is to explore the distribution, number, growth trends of bilingual education research and to collate influential journals and reference on bilingual education.
The results of the study found that the growth trend of bilingual education research can be divided into three stages. The first stage is the “embryonic stage” (1968-2007); the second stage is the “growing stage” (2008-2016); the third stage is the“explosive stage” (2017-now). The conclusions are as follows:
1. Embryonic stage: In this period, the highly cited paper found that human society is constituted by language and influenced by ideology. Also, the ideology affects human social behavior and language policy. Thus, language policy accounts for an important part of bilingual education during this stage.
2. Growing stage: During this period, it was found that, the practice of bilingual education and promotion of cross-language and transnational literacy learning are the ideal practice modes of bilingual education in the multilingual classroom.
3. Explosive stage: During this period, a key focus was the design and development of bilingual education from a critical perspective, with the ideal of equality of educational opportunity, creating a more equitable and comprehensive multilingual learning field.
Finally, the study suggests the government should take active measures to promote bilingual education, create a national bilingual strategy and create a fair and diverse learning field. |
