"Zhuoliu Wu's Orphans of Asia is one of the representative novels in the history of Taiwanese literature. The Chinese translation published in 1959 by Shaoqi Yang is the most widely read edition. However, Yang's translation has been criticized because of his out-of-date words and phrases as well as the ideology in his work. These are thought to be one of the reasons that the retranslation of Yuyan Huang was published. This study focuses on an investigation of the voices of the two translators of Orphans of Asia. It uses keyness analysis in corpus linguistics to analyze and compare the linguistic patterns and vocabulary preferences between two translations, and delves into the role and function of keywords in overall context. The results of this study indicated that the keywords, especially the use of nouns, reveals the translators' voice, and reflects their ideology, translation norms, historical background and social environment of that time. Both the methodology and the findings shed light on the implications for the exploration of translators' voice. |
