There are many varieties of camellia growing here in Taiwan. The color and shape of the flowers are different from variety to variety. All of these attractive varieties are so valuable for ornamental. In order to make an easier identification for these Varieties a horticultural classification is needed. It has been known that Camellia varieties were classified in three sections and nine groups by Dr. Hums (1951), and three sections fifteen groups by Tuneo Nakamura based on the flower forms. According to these principles three sections and eleven groups for the varieties growing in Taiwan are classified by the author as follows: Section Ⅰ Simple (1) Single shape (a) Korean camellia (2) Lichee shape (a) Lichee camellia (3) Plum blossom shape (a) Pale purple (b) Fen-pien mei (c) Pale red (d) Pai fei (4) Funnel shape (a) Taiwan camellia Section Ⅱ Incomplete double (1) Double shape (a) Double petal korean camellia (b) Eight-layered plum (c) White snow (d) Double petal camellia (e) Shuang pan mei (3) Purple red plum (2 Peony shape (a) White peony (b) Red peony (c) Early spring (d) Trinity (e) Thirteen provinces champion (f) Pink peony (g) Pink robe (h) Chung's temple (i) The five precious things (3) Open-Arms shape (a) Tai pei Section Ⅲ Complete double (1) Regular imbricated shape (a) Eighteen Scholars (b) Nine bends (As of river) (c) Rosa camellia (d)Cantonese pink (e) White pagoda (f) Guest officer (g) Tai hsing shih-pa-hsuch shih (h) Kuanyin camellia (Kuanyin goddess of mercy) (2) Pearl shape (a) Carp's eye (3) Tiered (a) White hexagonal (b) Red hexagonal (c) The lucky seven (4) Large lichee camellia shape (a) Buddha's crown. |
