Diabetes is a chronic disease. To prevent complication, patients with diabetes not only have to follow the treatment regimens, but also self regularize their lifestyle. Diabetic patients must, therefore, have the ability to self-manage their diabetes. Self regulation used in this paper is a theory in which patient is the center and health professional is an assistant in the health care. From this perspective, health professionals only provide necessary resources and assist patients learning behavior modification to achieve their desired goals by utilizing self-regulation strategies, and further enhance self-confidence. If patients do not have such experience, they can learn by observing others’ behavior and its outcome and then imitating their experience. It is a good way to enhance learning for elderly or people with lower educational level through imitating learning from Video Compact Disc (VCD). The characteristic of this VCD made by the authors is to present a process of self-regulation, providing a role model in the VCD for learner to imitate, and then help the diabetic patients understand the complex contents of selfregulation. We will develop this VCD based on the self-regulation theory and further evaluate its effect on self-management of patients with diabetes through intervention study. |
