Liver cancer is the first leading cause of death among males and the second leading cause of death of females in our country. Surgery has been the main treatment method. Unfortunately, only 10-20% of patients are candidate for resection. The technology of RFA (radiofrequency ablation) has been used as a new treatment option. RFA therapy uses electric energy to induce high temperatures, produce coagulating necrosis in tumor tissue. Although this therapy has fewer complications than surgery, it can cause some major complications, such as internal bleeding, abscess formation, and hollow organ perforation, etc. Patients also experience anxiety and pain. Nurses should institute and provide appropriate care for patients who undergo RFA, including a plan for pain management, supervision of any complications, and ways to diminish anxiety to improve patients’ comfort and safety. |
