The discussion focused on the impact of violence on nursing staff in the emergency department (ED). By reviewing the ED environment, assault characteristics, and the role of nursing professional in ED, the factors associated with violence were presented. These factors were then put in perspective to explore the function of nursing professionals in preventing and managing these scenarios of violence. Violence not only caused physical or psychological injury or trauma, but also broadly led to long-term adverse effects to nurses. It was a prevalent, but preventable, public problem. Hospitals administrators must provide adequate security systems and a comprehensive training and support service for all ED nurses. As the violent incidence continues to occur and its potential threat to the ED nurses, the safety of ED nurses should emerge as a critical concern of the administration. |
