Cultural assets provide designers with rich sources for design inspiration. The case study examined in this paper proposes a design process to develop nine stationery products that can represent the legend of 'the dragon's nine sons' in a modern way, and design practices combining craft-making and design procedures. The decorative art and symbolism derived from the legend are valuable cultural assets that reflect our auspicious culture and unique craft art. This design project explores how to design products that represent the cultural value of the legend 'the dragon's nine sons.' To incorporate the characteristics of the dragons in nine stationery products, designers focused on the link between the stationery products and the dragons, and worked out appropriate signs for the dragons. Through cooperation between wood craftsmen and design students, the creative form is anticipated to merge decorative art and modern product design into a new aesthetic. As designers consider adopting cultural elements to differentiate their products from others in the global market, this case study of the current paper provides a reference for design education and design practice. |
