This article describes the nursing experience of caring for a patient with facial bum. Data were collected through observation and interview during the nursing period from March 22 to May 3, 2011. After an assessment using Gordon's 11 Functional Health Pattern Assessment Tool, the identified nursing problems were pain from wound dressing change and physical rehabilitation, self-care deficiency because of hypertrophic scars and limited joint mobility, and body image changes associated with burned facial wounds. During the nursing period, the author provided the patient with wound care-relevant knowledge and care using the following skills: active caring, support, companionship, and listening. The patient was able to be discharged smoothly with the assistance of coping in physical, psychological, and social aspects. We hope that this nursing experience can be used as a reference for other nurses who care for patients with bum wound pain and body image issues. |
