A multipara with pregnancy of 28 weeks was admitted to the hospital for tocolysis because of regular contractions after a fall. The patient suffered overwhelmed physical and psychological stress from the adverse effects of tocolytics and worried about the baby's health and the risk of preterm labor. The nursing period was from August 1 to 7, 2010. The author assessed the patient's needs in physiological, psychological, social, and spiritual aspects. The identified nursing problems included tocolysis-related anxiety, contractions of uterus-associated discomfort, and the caregiver's stress of caring for the premature baby. Through observation, interview, and data collection, the author assisted the patient in understanding the importance of tocolysis, minimizing physiological discomfort, and providing guidance in accepting the preterm labor outcome by offering information on how to care for premature babies. |
