Purpose: The purpose of this study was to investigate the effect of foot-stretcher angles (39°, 42°, 45° and 48°) on the drive phase in rowing. Method: Twelve college female rowers participated in this study, and each subject was asked to perform 1-min test under four foot-stretcher angles on Concept II rowing ergometer. One JVC digital camera (60 Hz) and Biovision load cell (600 Hz) were synchronized to collect the kinematics and pulling force. An ANOVA for repeated measures was used to identify the differences for each dependent variable. Results: The result indicated that when increase the foot-stretcher angle, the maximum dorsiflexion and plantar flexion angles of the ankle were decrease. Besides, the rower could produce a higher mean power per stroke and mean power per drive phase in 39° foot-stretcher than that in 45° and 48° (p< .05). Conclusion: For the results of this study, 39° foot-stretcher is optimum in rowing efficiency. In addition, more than half of the subjects prefer 39° foot-stretcher for perceived comfort. It was suggested that the rower could choose 39° foot-stretcher in training and competition. |
