This study is conducted in view of the prevalence of tennis in Taiwan. There are by far few discussions on its development since the beginning of Taiwan's Retrocession. Purpose: To examine the background of development of tennis in the beginning of Taiwan's Retrocession and investigate its status of development. The scope of this study covers the period from 1945 to 1949. Methods: Literature analysis was made upon collection of information about historical background, tennis promoting organizations and tennis matches. A complete analysis could not be made as there were few documents found. Conclusion: Amid recession and inflation of the economy in the beginning of Taiwan's Retrocession, the development of hard tennis was difficult in the lack of courts and expensive imports, like rackets and balls. Compared with hard tennis, soft tennis match was more popular during the Japanese colonization. In the tennis match of The First Taiwan Provincial Athletic Meet, only hard tennis matches were held; afterwards, hard tennis and soft tennis formally appeared as individual sports in Taiwan. The Tennis Association of the Physical Education Department in Taiwan was established in 1948. The number of soft tennis members exceeded that of hard tennis members during this period. In sum, it was difficult to promote hard tennis in those days. |
