Understanding the structure of power within an organization is crucial to gaining an in-depth understanding of its workings. The direction and future of an organization is largely determined by its power structure. The theory of symbolic perspective posits that an organization is established through the sustained interaction of its members; symbolic actions, norms and processes are interpreted and given meaning through the experiences of its members. The operational framework of educational institutes is built on interaction among teachers, students, peers and colleagues. Buildings and facilities, historical ceremonies and cultural atmosphere are all relevant to the meaningful constructions described in symbolic perspective theory. Using the theory of symbolic perspective to analyze power within school organizations could provide us with unique insights into educational institutes. This study researched the sources, forms, and relationships of power in schools, and interpreted the demonstration of power in terms of the construction of meaning, communication tools, and cultural symbols described in symbolic perspective theory. Lastly, this study offers recommendations for the operation of schools with regard to the following three areas: establishment of systems, leadership performance, and sustainable learning. The significance and meaning of symbol interpretation was explored by combining the theory of symbolic perspective with the operation of educational institutions. |
