However, the thematic, geographic, chronological and method- ological breadth which the essays in this volume compose is quite great, and thus the collection, like many of its genre, lacks overall unity. This is despite the fact that all of the essays have something to do with some aspect of food – its preparation, consumption, symbolic or metaphoric significance on the European continent.
