Driven by a global target for net-zero emissions by 2050, the Joint Commission of Taiwan launched a “Net-Zero Healthcare” category within its established National Healthcare Quality Award program in 2025. This new category motivates healthcare institutions to drive environmental sustainability alongside clinical excellence and patient safety and to integrate decarbonization into clinical workflows and organizational governance.
The category has three tracks: Net-Zero Healthcare Solutions, Services, and Institutions. Evaluation covers six core dimensions: organizational influence, strategic management, implementation design, data analytics and performance assessment, information disclosure, and scalability. In the category’s inaugural year, 30 teams progressed from targeted initiatives (primarily energy and waste management) to broader integration with clinical operations and executive governance.
The award category establishes a benchmarking platform for peer exchange, positioning healthcare as a leader in the net-zero transition to a sustainable and resilient future.
