Since its establishment in 2016, the Shared Decision Making Resource Center at Shuang Ho Hospital has partnered with the Department of Medical Quality to advance hospital-wide shared decision making (SDM) initiatives. The Shared Decision Making Center focuses on education and research, whereas the Department of Medical Quality manages administrative promotion, tracking, and system implementation. Together, they facilitate communication between physicians and patients and actively participate in the Joint Commission of Taiwan’s SDM Practice Movement. This collaboration has gradually integrated SDM into all specialties across the hospital, creating a culture of meaningful communication between physicians and patients. In 2019, SDM was incorporated into the hospital’s quality improvement competition, with comprehensive support, training, and incentive mechanisms to encourage active participation from physicians and multidisciplinary teams. To date, nearly 80,000 patient interactions have been facilitated, substantially enhancing clinical service quality. This initiative’s success has been recognized in local and international journals, garnering invitations from numerous hospitals for knowledge sharing and site visits. In the future, the Department of Medical Quality will continue to uphold its ethos of “Shared Responsibility, Shared Commitment, Shared Excellence” to further expand the impact and value of SDM to deliver even higher-quality healthcare services for patients.
