This study investigates the effectiveness and progression of knowledge-building activities integrated into the menstruation curriculum of seventh-grade health education, specifically in enhancing students’ empathy and global literacy. The research was conducted with a class of 28 seventh-grade students from a public middle school in Taiwan. A mixed-methods approach was employed, with equal emphasis on qualitative and quantitative data. Pre- and post-tests were administered using the Empathy Scale and the Global Literacy-Understanding Perspective self-assessment Form. Additionally, the students’ interaction on Knowledge Forum were coded, analyzed, and summarized to illustrate their development in empathy and global literacy. Main findings of the study include: (1) The improvement in creating notes on the Knowledge Forum is associated with the advancement in the quality of students’ ideas. (2) Knowledge-building activities contribute to enhancing the level and content of students’ empathy. (3) Knowledge building activities help guide students to think from different perspectives and reflect on diverse viewpoints. |
