Since 2021, we have been implementing Patient Safety Leadership WalkRounds™ at Taipei Medical University Hospital. To ensure that frontline staff understand the importance of reporting adverse events, we optimized the Patient Safety Leadership WalkRounds™ intervention in 2023 by introducing anonymous presurveys to evaluate staff’s knowledge about reporting patient safety events and by conducting 15-min internal audits through (Patient Focused Method, PFM). Senior management led the rounds, engaging 136 staff (from 15 departments) who had completed presurveys and participated in interviews.
Significant postintervention improvements were noted in staff’s awareness of the hospital’s reward system for reporting adverse events. Consequently, the rate of adverse event reporting increased. Furthermore, our findings highlighted the need to enhance staff’s understanding of the importance of reporting even harmless events. The rate of reporting increased in all departments visited. Compared with the results of the previous year’s assessments, current assessments revealed enhanced safety culture in clinical support departments.
All problems identified during the rounds were addressed within a month, with feedback provided to corresponding departments. Overall, the optimized intervention made frontline staff feel valued and supported by the hospital, effectively enhancing their willingness and timeliness in reporting.
