The Ministry of Education launched the University Social Responsibility (USR) program in year 2017; it is expected to strengthen the link between university and regional cooperation, put into practice of university social responsibility, and fosters students who can create value for the local region. The architectural design course in the Department of Architecture and Urban Planning at Chung Hua University is designed to develop students’ basic skills in effective communication, teamwork, self-learning and fundamental design. In order to nurture a university student with interest in continuing to implement social practice, the USR Design Center is established based on the idea of a CO-OP Studio within the department course framework. The CO-OP studio aims to recruit cross-grade students with initiative, leadership, and execution characteristics to operate the USR project as design topic independently in according to the specific site and project objectives. In addition, during the semester, studio invites local craftsmen or different filed of professional expertise to share their skills and knowledge to students according to the requirements of each stage of the project, which creates more learning value and provides students with cross-field professional knowledge.
