This qualitative case study involved intervention, with the emphasis on the empowerment of the mother of a two-and-a-half-year-old child (Kwang) with severe disabilities. The data were collected over a 9-month period through participant observation and interviews. In the ongoing process of empowerment, Kwang's mother was treated as our partner and accompanied with emotional support. To enhance her parenting skills, we adopted such strategies as sharing, discussion, and demonstration to guide her to teach and manage her child more effectively in daily routines, and, most importantly, to take the initiative in communicating and solving problems with confidence. The results revealed that the mother was enabled to gradually overcome the feeling of powerlessness, gain a sense of control over her child (Kwang), and adapt to a new lifestyle. However, given the severity of Kwang's problems and mother's characteristics, there were still limits to what she was able to do. |
