This study examines the impact of home country geopolitical risk on the global employer attractiveness of multinational enterprises (MNEs), with a focus on the moderating effect of national R&D intensity. We argue that geopolitical risk originating from an MNE’s home country diminishes its appeal to prospective international employees. However, higher government investment in R&D can mitigate this negative effect. Utilizing a panel dataset comprising 12,910 firm-country-year observations from leading MNEs between 2016 and 2020, our empirical analysis confirms both the direct negative impact of geopolitical risk and the buffering effect of national R&D intensity. These findings underscore the strategic value of innovation-oriented public policy in enhancing MNEs’ability to attract global talent amid geopolitical uncertainty. |
