The electrochemical characteristics of zinc in 8 M KOH electrolytes containing polyethylene glycol (PEG) were investigated. It was found that PEG400 (PEG with an average molecular weight of 400 g/mol) as well as PEG600 could dramatically decrease the corrosion current of zinc in extremely short time. In addition, the protection efficiency of PEG600 was superior to that of PEG400. The optimum concentration of either PEG400 or PEG600 addition in the 8M KOH electrolyte is around 0.2%. During the first ten days of storage, the PEG600 provided zinc with a rather high protection efficiency of > 90% from corrosion. However, an abrupt drop of protection efficiency, about 16%, was observed when the storage time was extended to 30 days. This decline of protection efficiency of PEG was in agreement with the results derived from AC impedance measurements as well as morphological evaluations. |
