The distinction between “theodolites” and “transit” stems from differing requirements for telescope transit capability and measurement precision during the historical development of surveying instruments. Historically, the term 'transit' was commonly used to refer to engineering theodolites with telescope transit capability, while 'theodolite' typically referred to precision angle-measuring instruments, with the two having certain differences in their applications and technical characteristics. However, with the evolution of instrument design, virtually all modern theodolites now possess transit capability, making this distinction technically no longer significant. Nevertheless, the term 'transit' still frequently appears in surveying textbooks and technical literature, which can easily cause confusion if not properly differentiated. In terms of surveying terminology, translating 'transit' as 'transit theodolite' in Chinese better reflects its original technical meaning and helps avoid misunderstanding it as a separate category of instrument independent from theodolites. This compilation is intended to serve as a reference for reading surveying literature and writing technical articles. |
