This report summarizes the author's overseas teaching experience as a Mandarin Teaching Assistant under the Mandarin Education Program of National Chung Hsing University. In 2025, the author was dispatched to Brigham Young University in the United States for an eight-month teaching practicum. Through direct involvement in university-level Mandarin instruction, the author gained in-depth insight into the American higher education system, student learning backgrounds, and curriculum structures. Many students at Brigham Young University possess prior Mandarin exposure due to religious missionary experiences, resulting in varied language proficiency and diverse instructional needs. During the practicum, the author served in both teaching assistant and instructor roles, participating in and independently conducting multiple Mandarin courses. Responsibilities included instructional support, course planning, assessment design, and administrative coordination. These experiences highlighted the distinct challenges associated with different teaching roles and emphasized the importance of communication and collaboration among instructors. Through teaching reading and writing courses, the author further developed cross-cultural teaching competence and professional expertise. Overall, this overseas teaching experience enhanced the author's understanding of Mandarin education in the United States and contributed significantly to professional growth in pedagogy, curriculum design, and academic administration. The experience serves as a valuable foundation for future engagement in the field of Mandarin language education. |
