After the late Qing Dynasty, Eastern and Western academic atmosphere have gradually affected Chinese intellectual circles. The beginning of feminism was one of the most important cultural phenomenon in modern China as the issues raised by newspapers included female education, freedom of marriage, family system, individual liberation and women’s suffrage. Furthermore, there were abundant feminism thoughts in Ladies’Journal, published by The Commercial Press, because of its long and large circulation. Hsi-Chen Chang was an editor of Ladies’Journal who had consciousness of innovation; he reproduced many Japanese writers and philosophers’articles as a result of his specialty in Japanese during his career. These articles’themes such as freedom to love and marry, economic independence and family relationships, along with individual consciousness and women’s rights also corresponded to Women’s Enlightenment after The May Fourth Movement in China,. Therefore, Ladies’Journal edited by Hsi-Chen Chang reflected the development and interchange in the women’s movements of two countries, and an attempt to respond with the modern transformation of China. |
